Quick Answer: Your first appointment starts with a conversation with Pailin about how you feel, what you want from the massage and anything she should know before treatment begins. She’ll explain what to expect and adapt the treatment to you. During the massage, you can ask for changes at any time. Afterwards, you can ask questions about how you feel or what might suit you next time.
You don’t need to arrive knowing how a massage appointment is supposed to work.
You also don’t need to know exactly which areas need attention, how much pressure you prefer or what Pailin is likely to find.
Your first visit is partly about working those things out together.
It starts with a short conversation
Before the massage begins, Pailin will ask how you’re feeling and what has brought you in.
That might include:
You don’t need to provide a technical description.
Saying “my shoulders have felt really tight this week” or “I’ve been training a lot and my legs feel heavy” is more useful than trying to diagnose the cause yourself.
If you still haven’t decided which treatment would suit you, Pailin can help. The guide Which massage is right for me? explains the six options in more detail.
Pailin will explain what happens next
Once she understands what you’re looking for, Pailin will explain anything you need to know before the treatment starts.
That includes clothing or changing requirements where relevant, how the treatment will work and any positions or assisted movements that might be used.
For Traditional Thai Massage, pressure, movement and assisted stretching can all form part of the treatment.
You remain fully clothed for Traditional Thai Massage and for the assisted-stretching parts of Sports Massage. Other treatments may involve undressing to your underwear, with towels used for coverage.
For more detail, see What should I wear?.
The treatment isn’t a fixed routine
Pailin provides every appointment herself and adapts the massage to the person in front of her.
That means your first treatment won’t simply follow a standard sequence regardless of what you’ve discussed.
She may spend more time around an area that feels particularly tight, adjust the pressure or change the balance between massage and stretching depending on the treatment you’ve chosen and how your body responds.
You can also speak during the massage.
If something feels too strong, you want less pressure, you’d prefer a particular area avoided or you simply need a moment to change position, say so.
You don’t have to endure discomfort because you think that’s what massage is supposed to feel like. Read Will the massage hurt? if that is one of your concerns before visiting.
What happens afterwards?
When the massage finishes, there’s no test you need to pass and no treatment plan you have to commit to.
You can tell Pailin how the treatment felt and ask any questions that have come up during the appointment.
If you return another time, the next massage doesn’t have to be identical. How you feel, what you’ve been doing and what you want from the appointment can all be different.
